In order to ensure the patient’s fitness to drive cycles and motorcycles, or motor vehicles (driver’s license), it is necessary for the patient to undergo a medical examination aimed at verifying the basic psychophysical requirements essential for the intended activity.
During the examination, the competent physician checks the general condition of the patient in addition to the patient’s visual and hearing abilities. In case the patient has particular medical conditions, it is advisable to bring along reports of previously performed examinations or specialized tests. Occasionally, the appointed physician may require additional examinations or specialist examinations before issuing a certificate of fitness for driver’s license renewal.
After making the examination for license renewal (C – D – E – K) and having deemed the patient fit, the doctor issues a certificate allowing the patient to drive for a maximum of 60 days, so that the patient can drive while waiting for the new valid driving document that is delivered by the DMV to the address given by the patient within 15 days of the visit. In the event that the license within 15 days does not arrive at the specified destination, the Ministry of Transportation can be contacted to request information or a possible duplicate (at 800 23 23 23, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
