Intravenous infusion is a prescription nursing service that involves the administration of a solution or drug through the patient’s veins. It follows that in an intravenous injection, the active ingredient of the drug is delivered directly into the circulatory system.
Intravenous infusion must be performed by highly trained healthcare personnel and could lead to embolism formation, the possibility of hypotension and fainting, and the possibility of bacterial and viral infections.
The feasibility of the outpatient service depends on the type of medication to be infused: not all medications can be infused in an outpatient setting, iron infusions or some particular antibiotics, for example, can only be infused in the hospital.
